The role of the Human Genome Project

Can’t geneticists just look up the genes they
need from all the sequencing data collected by
the Human Genome Project, or HGP? Someday
the answer will be yes, but we’re not there yet.
By 2005, 99 percent of the gene-rich part of the
genome (called the euchromatin) is fully
sequenced. That’s the good news. The bad
news for gene hunters is that a whopping 20
percent of the noncoding regions of the genome
still aren’t sequenced.
